Some of the reasons why we are doing a unit on community helpers is because it is important for children to know who community helpers are and for them to have appreciation and awareness towards the different people that help us. Another aspect is for children to know who to turn to for help when in trouble. Therefore using "calling the police" as a threat to children when they misbehave - is a big no-no. This is why visiting the fire station and police coming to school is not just about a fun trip but also about children not being frightened. Ex: if there's fire in a house, there have been situations where kids hid from firefighters because they were afraid. Or if lost, kids not wanting to go to police officers for help... Therefore, we want kids to know and feel comfortable around these people and to build trust towards these safety helpers.
We asked Morah to do the fire and water experiment again and we loved watching the water put out the fire!
We sang the song: TUNE: POP GOES THE WEESLE
Down the street the firetruck goes
The fireman sees the fire
Up the ladder with his hose
(pshshsh squirting with hose) out goes the fire!
Police officers
A Police officer came to visit us in school.
She let us all get into the police car.
She showed us her sirens, and let us push the buttons to make the noises that come when a police car has to quickly go and help someone!
We practiced dialing 911 on our pretend phone - the number to call the police if we need their help or the fireman if there is a fire.
We sang: (TUNE: 3 blind mice)
911 911 Help is on the way Help is on the way
If I need help I know what to do
I will call the policeman and he'll help me too
911 911
